Germany has been a stunning disappointment to me. I was in the theater in the 70s/80s. I always admired Germany for the genuine soul-searching they went through at that time, unlike Japan and later Russia. Books, movies, plays, museums, TV shows, Alexanderplatz, Tin Drum, works of psychology all addressing the same thing: what was it about us that made us fall for this? It seemed like they really dug deep. And to this day, no one worries about Germany invading their country. To see Germany (and Australia!) fall so far leaves me speechless.
